A Day with Yves de Chiris.

Monsieur Yves de Chiris needs introduction because maybe not everyone knows him very well, even though he is a living legend in the fragrance industry worldwide. Yves de Chiris is a marketing consultant and one of the most respected names in the perfume industry. Direct descendant of the founder of Maison Chiris in Grasse (perfume family that represents what is "grassoise" for over two centuries) he is also one of the creators along with Olivier Cresp, of the worldwide success of Angel by Thierry Mugler.

We were privileged to spend the day with Monsieur de Chiris at our school, Grasse Institute of Perfumery. We learned a lot from him. Here are some examples of our discussions with the master:

The importance of each market’s culture when developing a fragrance. For example, in the USA, where the market appears to be more conservative, politically correct, the preference is for more fresh and soft fragrance with green, fruity and floral notes. In France, where the market is more sophisticated, eclectic, they accept more rich, floral, oriental and innovative (as niche and prestige) fragrances. In Asia Pacific, another market ultra-conservative, the light and fresh fragrance with floral notes is more successful.

What is the secret behind the success of the famous Chanel no.5 which remains at the top of bestseller lists since 1921? According to M. of Chiris the answer relies on three words: Transparency, Respect and Continuity. Transparency + Continuity: Chanel has always maintained its own DNA coherent in their launches, both fashion and fragrances. Transparency + Continuity: The bottles of all perfumes always remained the same, reinforcing the image of Chanel no. 5. Respect: The quality of the materials in Chanel no.5 rich floral formulation is very important. They incorporate the finest essences of roses (from their private fields in Grasse), Ylang Ylang, Jasmine and Vanilla. Respect: Chanel no. 5 has never stopped advertising  since 1921!

Problems of the perfume industry today.
The volume of sales and marketing became more important than the fragrance itself, so the consumer can be intimidated and get lost in a sea of launches. Today, brands are trying to reach everyone at once and basically cover all olfactory directions. Volume does not mean prestige. One cannot be everything at the same time and still be credible for the consumer. With the recent global financial crisis, consumers give more value for the money, they do not allow making mistakes when buying a fragrance, for example. Communications need to be more transparent.

Future of the perfume industry.
According to M. Chiris of, "Go narrow and deep rather than shallow and wide", meaning, develop few brands that are authentic and have their own olfactory signature instead of offering a huge variety of the same thing and that also compete with each other. And the most important thing from my point of view: education. The industry future relies on educating its consumers. A good example is the wine industry. A few decades ago, one could not make a purchase differentiating a merlot from a pinot. With the integration of wine producers, wholesalers and retail outlets to educate the consumer, it is now possible not only find a greater variety of wines, but also the consumer can make an aware and more informed purchase. The same happened with the bread and coffee industries. We have to understand that we sell emotions not perfumes, and an informed consumer will have more pleasure in the process of choosing a fragrance and will not be afraid of buying something wrong. It would become an impulse purchase, thus generating more sales!

I couldn’t agree more with M. of Chiris. I think the perfume industry at some point need to turn to education for its own survival. A good indication of the beginning of this cycle is an increasing number of blogs and communities about perfumes that work hard, however alone, distant from the industry. One day maybe the companies will realize that uniting all forms of communicating with its consumers, could be actually profitable. What do you think?

Have an excellent and fragrant week!

Museum of Arts and Design Announce Chandler Burr’s “Art of Scent” Exhibit Curations – Nov 13, 2012

Chandler Burr, as many of our readers know, is the Curator for the The Art of Scent, 1889-2012,  which is the first museum exhibition dedicated to exploring the design and aesthetics of olfactory art.  Twelve pivotal fragrances, dating from 1889 to the present, were chosen  to open the exhibit  and will be on  view November 13, 2012, through January 27, 2013, at the Museum of Arts and Design. The scents will be experienced individually in a special installation designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro that emphasizes the distinct combination of artistry and chemistry entailed in their creation. The Art of Scent will be accompanied by a boxed catalogue designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro for MAD, featuring identically bottled samples of select works in the exhibition.

The exhibition opens with the work of Aimé Guerlain, who was among the first to introduce synthetic molecules alongside natural materials with the design of Jicky (1889). The exhibition will then lead visitors through an olfactory experience that showcases the work of the most significant scent artists of the 20th and early 21st centuries, including:

  • Ernest Beaux, who in 1921 used chemical compounds known as synthetic aldehydes
    in combination with a floral structure to create the first great modernist work with Chanel N˚ 5;
  • Bernard Chant, whose Aromatics Elixir (1971) was one of the great mid-twentieth century works that brought America into the forefront of perfume creation
  • Olivier Cresp, whose Angel (1992) is the paradigmatic gourmand work of the late 20th century;
  • Annie Buzantian and Alberto Morillas, who in using a carbon dioxide extraction in their influential Pleasures (1995), mainstreamed a major technological advance in the medium and altered olfactory design; and
  • Daniela Andrier, whose Untitled (2010) is an ingenious neo-brutalist work that references nature both violently and abstractly.

By Kilian, True Luxury in Niche Perfumes.

Bom, voltando a realidade.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The "house" By Kilian comes with pedigree. Monsieur Kilian Henessey is nothing less than the grandson of the founder of LVMH group. Continuing the family tradition of owning businesses in the luxury market, Kilian includes its fragrances to this segment. The perfumes reflect his vision and his personality: uncompromising quality, elegance and luxury. If you are looking for a perfume with integrity and exceptional luxury, take a look at the collections By Kilian and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

The collections are: L'Oeuvre Noire Collection and Arabian Nights Collection. The first is divided into Male, Female and Unisex. The second, a tribute to the East and part of it, is one of my favorite perfumes: Amber Oud. It’s simply a work of art and sublime. Created by Calice Becker, Amber Oud is soft, warm and a sensual journey to the East. It merges two of the most characteristic ingredients of that region: amber and "oud". Speaking of oud again, I finally had the opportunity to evaluate this expensive yet popular ingredient, and to my surprise, it is intensely animalic. So intense, that it smells like cow´s poop. But also very rich, with many facets, such as wood, incense and leather. Miss Becker has added to these ingredients a good dose of vanilla from Madagascar and Benzoin from Laos and it became extremely well balanced. Magnificent in the skin, this scent is pure pleasure.

All perfumes are EDP off course and another luxurious piece of art is also the packaging. In the collection Arabian Nights, for example, the bottle has a gold plaque engraved with the name of the perfume and the box is decorated with a gold plate on the top. Each perfume is housed in a stunning satin-lined black lacquer box complete with lock and key.

Some other good surprises from the house are the two new launches for the Spring / Summer: Water Calligraphy and Bamboo Harmony also created by Calice Becker (Miss Becker, would accept me as your apprentice for the next year? Would be more than an honor, it would be a dream ...). Well, back to reality. Harmony Bamboo makes a beautiful homage to bamboo. Serene and subtle, the perfume takes us to nature with their green and woody notes. Water Calligraphy is another beautiful tribute to water. Delicate and ethereal as the art of Chinese calligraphy, this aquatic floral fragrance brings the peace needed to develop our spirituality and is also very feminine.

It's Sprig in Grasse! É Primavera em Grasse!

A primavera finalmente chegou a Grasse.

ENGLISH VERSION:

The most anticipated season has finally arrived in Grasse: Spring. The Perfume Capital of the World begins to bloom with its flowers. The shops, cafes and restaurants of the "old village" are all open, inviting all to enter. Tourists are seen in increasing numbers, clicking their cameras in order to capture every detail of this old city. However, Grasse produces somewhat mixed feelings. Compared to neighboring cities or nearby villages, it transmits a downfall feeling. It misses some care by the city to make it cleaner and more beautiful, because of its historical and current importance to the fragrance industry. But at the same time it can be magic, and live in this city is definitely a privilege.

All perfumers, aspiring perfumers or just admirers of the art should visit Grasse. For it is here that the essence of the fragrance is (literally). Come in spring or summer and smell the city like Jean-Baptiste Grenouille once did. The possibility of being in the middle of everything involving perfume is irreplaceable.

Since I came to study perfume in Grasse, I have had unique opportunities that fully complement the exhaustive journey to know and memorize over than 300 raw materials. Getting to know big perfumers such as Jean-Claude Elena, Jacques Cavallier, Aurelien Guichard, Max Gavarry among others. Important events happen every month sponsored by the International Museum of Perfume. Knowing the inside industry and work ("summer internship") for fragrance companies of the region. Visit the famous fields of lavender, roses and jasmine (although we did not visit, because the seasons have not arrived yet). Once I visit them, I will write about the experience and post multiple photos, because the olfactory and visual journey must be something surreal! The month of May is just around the corner and with it comes the roses of May and Expo Rose in Grasse.

For example, yesterday at the annual "Journée du Parfum" sponsored by the Rotary of Grasse, I discovered that the creative laboratory of the luxury brand LVMH will soon be established in Grasse and Jacques Cavallier being "in-house nose" will soon launch the first fragrance of the brand. Along with the brand Hermes, who knows, maybe Grasse in the near future could become a hub of perfume creation of luxury brands?

Congratulations to the city that despite of its “downfall” feeling that I sometimes feel sorry about, and the changes that are not always welcome, still fights to keep its title as the world capital of perfume live and ongoing. I fully support you!

Have an excellent and fragrant week!

Inside the Industry with Argeville.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Argeville is a medium-sized company of "flavors & fragrances" located near Grasse, Mougins in southern France. The story of this family owned business started in 1921 when it specialized only in extracting odors and essences of the region. In 1981 began a major expansion and a division of flavors was also added.

Recently, the class of GIP was invited to do a "tour" at the company to closely get to know its processes. We had the opportunity to go through all sectors, from creating fragrances, lab, manufacturing of essential oils, quality control to the formulation and application.

The company is located in a green area, with lots of trees, bushes and plants, like a park. The peace and tranquility of the place should help to keep the mood up of all who work there. The wooden chalets blend very well with the authenticity of the place. Each chalet is aligned and connected side by side. There, the odors produced by humans mingle with those produced by nature itself.

Cutting edge technology has been implemented in all sectors, but what draw the most attention are undoubtedly the robots. They make the role that once belong to the laboratory technicians of composing fragrance formulas. They mix ingredients in small quantities for samples ordered by perfumers or large quantities for final production, with accuracy and small margin of error. But the lab technicians are still needed to correct minor errors and add material that robots cannot work with, such as powders or those too viscous.

The production of absolute and concretes of roses, jasmine, beeswax and other raw materials was also something beautiful to see and to smell so close. The production of these materials is small, but with high quality. Extracting these fantastic smells that nature offers us requires hard work, dedication and care in handling. It was a wonderful experience to understand how the supply chain of a perfume works. We do not realize how much work is involved from the farmer who plants the natural ingredients from around the world, the distilleries and perfumers to production.

As Chandler Burr said: "Each perfume bottle contains the world."

Have an excellent and fragrant week!

Did Francis Kurkdjian Forget the Oud in His Latest Launch?

Acabei lavando no banheiro.

I believe that Francis Kurkdjian does not need much introduction. But for those who do not know, this great "nose" has its own "maison" in Paris: Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Born in Paris in 1969 he belongs to an Armenian family and after being trained in ISIPCA, began his career at Quest. He owns a giant list of famous perfume creations of also famous brands such as Jean Paul Gaultier's Le Male that he created when he was 25 years old.

Talking about the perfumes of his own "maison", his latest release (it will reach stores in May 2012) is OUD. Mr. Kirkdjian proposes a modern and innovative perfume with the ingredient hit of the moment. So innovative, that I have not found Oud in its composition. It is a very sweet fragrance; even little fruity and sweet notes of amber stand out in the "drydown". Oud has a peculiar odor, and I believe that when we experience a perfume with this component, we want to feel its presence. Compared with other wonderful fragrances with the same component as the main ingredient, such as Les nombres D'or Oud Mona di Orio or Amber Oud By Kilian, the OUD by Kurkdjian is found in the name only.

Other scents from the "maison" which I tried and are very unique:

Lumiere Noire pour Femme EDP: with longevity well above average, this scent is very sensual and seductive. Featuring a classic French perfume, it has striking notes like rose, jasmine, patchouli. It evokes pure power in its various forms depending on the occasion. More than a complex and elaborated fragrance, it is art without compromise.

Absolue Pour le Soir EDP: has a strong personality and presence. It's intense, and the ambiguity of sweet amber and animalic notes provoke at the same time fear and attraction. I wore while going out at night, but the occasion was inappropriate and led to feelings of attraction and aversion. I ended up washing off in the bathroom. It’s more suitable for dark nights...

If anyone has tested OUD, leave a comment about the experience!

Have a great and fragrant week!
